The Leine Canal branches off water from the Leine south of the Kiessee and directs it through the city. This water was used, among other things, to drive mills with an undershot water wheel. Some of the names of the mills have survived to this day: Walkemühle, Stegemühle, ... and also the Odilienmühle, which is also called "Little Mill".
