Niesten is located at approx. 347 m above sea level. NN up to approx. 390 m above sea level. NN at the open end of the Zillertal, a small, right side valley of the Weismain valley funnel. The valley and the slopes surrounding the village belong to the northern foothills of the Franconian Jura in the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park. The settlement of the residents is likely to be related to the construction of Niesten Castle around 1100.
