Wikipedia: "He was the chief of staff of the Prussian Army for thirty years. He commanded troops in Europe and the Middle East, commanding during the Second Schleswig War, Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War. He is often referred to as Moltke the Elder to distinguish him from his nephew Helmuth Johann Ludwig von Moltke, who commanded the German Army at the outbreak of World War I."

Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke, Count von Moltke from 1870, known as Moltke the Elder, popularly known as The Great Silent (born October 26, 1800 in Parchim; † April 24, 1891 in Berlin), was a Prussian field marshal. As chief of the general staff, he played a key role in Prussia's success in the wars of German unification. Moltke was not only one of the most important generals of his time, but his concepts are still relevant today - even in the civilian sector.

The sculpture was created in 1904 by Joseph Uphues in the Neo-Baroque style and is considered a masterpiece of the Berlin School of Sculpture.
It originally stood on Königsplatz, but was removed in 1938 and erected at its current location in 1939. The reason for this was the planned transformation of Berlin into the world capital Germania.
