A Bismarck memorial in Hamburg was smeared with paint as early as June. Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898), Chancellor of the Reich from 1871 to 1890, fought Catholics and socialists and nevertheless introduced the most progressive social laws in the world. Many consider him to be the pioneer of German colonialism. (with dpa)
