In earlier times the lake or the area had the following names: "Sau Säling", "Sausuhlen" and "Sausuhlen Schlucht".The "Sausuhlensee" is now a "Friedhofssee" because it is located on the state-owned cemetery Heerstraße. The cemetery was created by the Charlottenburg garden director Erwin Barth from 1921-24. The rows of graves are terraced around the lake. Numerous famous people were buried there, for example "Loriot". On the maps in front of the cemetery, two sinks or wetlands / lakes / Suhlen are drawn, which may have been separated by one of the "cross bars" typical in the Grunewald. Today, however, the "Sausuhlensee" is a single lake.
