The Bergschule, today the Josef-Haltrich-Gymnasium or Liceul Teoretic "Josef Haltrich," was founded by Transylvanian Saxons and documented in 1522. A Latin school had likely existed previously, as between 1445 and 1521, 95 Sighisoara students studied at the University of Vienna. From 1607 to 1608, the Schola Majoris was built on the Schulberg hill, which was expanded by a building in 1619. Today, classes are taught here in Romanian and German.

The school, commonly called the "Bergschule," is named after the Transylvanian Saxon theologian, teacher, and fairy tale collector Koseph Haltrich, who served as its principal. German is taught as a native language from kindergarten through the Abitur (high school diploma), and many subjects are taught in German. Even today, there are many enrollments, and many Romanian parents have a strong desire for their children to learn German and culture as perfectly as possible. Career opportunities are then significantly improved, and the German department enjoys a good reputation, as many activities are held jointly.

The Lyceum has an interesting history and is located in an interesting place. The romantic school building in historicist style is located northeast of the Lutheran church. The Joseph Haltrich Lyceum was built between 1900 and 1901 on the site of the former Baroque Lutheran school, partly using its materials. The construction of the old, Baroque school began in 1772, but certainly had medieval predecessors, as the Bergschule is mentioned as early as the first third of the 16th century, but indirect evidence suggests that it already existed in the 15th century.
