The building, constructed in 1938, is already the third station building in Glückstadt. The first station was built as a terminal station at the harbor as an extension of the line from Elmshorn. From 1845 to 1857 it was the terminus of the newly built Elmshorn-Glückstadt line. When the railway line was extended to Itzehoe in 1857, the route was routed past the old town in the east. The new station was built near the fortifications. After the barracks opened in 1937, more passengers arrived in Glückstadt and the small building was no longer sufficient. It was demolished and the current brick building with a spacious forecourt was built.
