The small town is located on the Schwalmniederung (Bruchwald) Its name is said to come from Middle High German, in which "Swam" means inundation, alluvial land. But it can also be based on the word "swahm", brodem, haze, which is often found in the damp lowlands.
Schwaam (about 160 inhabitants) is known for a number of half-timbered and thatched houses. Some of the houses are up to 400 years old. The most beautiful and oldest is the Geerkens house. It was built in 1616 as a large, representative courtyard.
In the village there are two diagonally opposite bars:
Gasthof Timmermanns, a biker and hiker's meeting place
Or Hotel Restaurant Schüppen for people who prefer something quieter

Small but nice🤩. Very well-kept, small place in a beautiful landscape.

Schwaam is a very well-kept historical gem and well worth seeing.

The sanctuary for cows is also a highlight of Schwaam:
