The 2.60 meter high monument by sculptor Clemens Buscher was donated by citizens in 1901. After the National Socialists tore the sculpture down in 1936 and cast it in ammunition in 1940, a reconstruction adorned Heinrich-Heine-Allee.

In 1901, a bronze statue of the city's former music director was attached to the facade of the old opera house in Düsseldorf. The statue created by Clemens Buscher was torn down by the Nazis in August 1936 and melted down in 1940.
