Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the Orangery Palace built on the Bornstedt hills between 1851 and 1864. Based on his designs, the architects Stüler and Hesse drew up plans for a building in the Italian Renaissance style. The building houses a painting room, former guest and servants' apartments, some of which now serve as museums, and halls for overwintering potted plants.
