The Friendship Temple is a small white marble temple near the New Palace. Friedrich II had it built in memory of his favorite sister, Margravine Wilhelmine von Bayreuth.
Although Wilhelmine died in 1758, the temple south of the main avenue in Sanssouci Park was not built until 1768 under the direction of Carl von Gontard. The reason for the delay was the Seven Years' War. In 1770 the construction of the small open round temple was completed.
On the front, the friendship stamp is adorned with eight Corinthian columns arranged in pairs. Medallions were attached to them, which show famous friendship couples of antiquity. These are Pylades and Orestes, Euryalus and Nisus, Heracles and Philoctetes, and Peirithoos and Theseus.

In the years 1772 to 1773 a marble statue was erected in front of the back wall of the temple, which shows the seated Wilhelmine with a book and a lap dog. The sculpture is the work of the Bayreuth brothers, Johann David Räntz and Johann Lorenz Wilhelm Räntz, who still knew the margravine personally. The sculpture is the plastic implementation of a painting by the court painter Antoine Pesne.
