Great Fountain and Statues of the Gods, Sanssouci Park

Twelve figures of leading French sculptors of the 18th century are set up around the large fountain below the palace, in the "garden paterre" and in the center of the main avenue. Until 1842 there was only one water basin. Only with the construction of the waterworks on the banks of the Havel does the fountain bubble here as well.

The 12 figures represent the four elements (earth, fire, water, air) surrounded by eight gods (Apollo, Diana, Juno, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Minerva, Venus). All figures stand on 1.31 meters high, round ones
Marble plinths.

The first figures, Mercury and Venus, were erected in 1750. They were created in 1748 by the French sculptor Jean Baptiste Pigalle. Frederick the Great got it from the French King Louis XV. given in return for valuable horses that he had received.

Potsdam like a postcard. Highly recommended early in the morning. Then not so many people are traveling.
