Boven Vrijlegem is the oldest hamlet of Mollem.
Based on the -gemtoponym, historians believe that the origins of Boven Vrijlegem can be traced back to the 6th – 7th century as a Frankish settlement. Over the centuries, the Vrijlegem site with its farms Het Hof van Vrijlegem and Hof ter Kalken became a leasehold of the abbey of Affligem
As early as the beginning of the thirteenth century, documents mention a mansus at "Vrilenghem". Historians conclude that this was an important district from the division into Vrijlegem, the old residential core, and Neder-Vrijlegem, the agricultural complex, currently Boven Vrijlegem and Beneden Vrijlegem respectively.
