The knot trees on this hiking trail are very characteristic of the landscape in Flanders. Pollard trees are trees that are truncated one and a half to two meters. Over time, this creates the typical knot, from which new branches sprout.
The brushwood from the willows was mainly used as a braiding material.
During World War One, the brushwood was requisitioned by the German occupier. The brushwood was used in the front line to reinforce the trenches.
Today the cavities, created by rotting process, in the pollard trees are shelters for little owls and bats.
