Until the 14th century, an arm of the Rhine flowed where the inner harbor is now located. The city wall at this location was begun in 1120 and completed in the 12th/13th centuries. For a long time, it was barely visible; only with the renovation of the inner harbor was the wall uncovered again. In few places in Duisburg is the city wall as well preserved and restored as it is here.
