Best Hikes to Pedestrian bridge at the marina

Tips

  • It is unique, the first height-adjustable suspension bridge in the world. And it is an eye-catcher: the 150-ton bridge, which consists of 14 concrete parts, spans between four pylons.

  • "... The humpback bridge doesn't look that massive: its 15 centimetre thick individual parts are connected to each other by joints - like the link bracelet of a watch. So that the bridge can bend to allow ships to pass through, the pylons are pulled inland by hydraulic cylinders. The supporting cable is tightened and the bridge arches upwards - up to nine metres. This unique mechanism was thought up by the Stuttgart professor Jörg Schlaich, and the Duisburg company Stahlbau Raulf implemented his idea. The hydraulic system of the "humpback bridge" is operated by the bridge keeper at the Schwanentor.
It crosses the harbour basin and connects the old town park with the marina and five boats. In addition to the resulting span of 73 m and a width of 3.5 m, the footbridge must be able to be raised from its normal position by 10.60 m above normal water level to enable ships to pass through the harbour basin.
    - Span 73.72 m
    - Extension of the Superstructure in raised state 3.65 m
    - Height of masts 20 m
    - Diameter of mast 419 mm
    - Height of hump in normal state 1.10 m
    - Height of hump in raised state 9.20 m ..."

  • The barrier-free jetty at Marina Duisburg was built in 2001. Its 133 berths between 6m and 20m long are located in the old part of Europe's largest inland port.
