The fountain is located in the pond of the Verzetstrijderspark at Marialust in Apeldoorn. In 1930, a citizens' initiative was started in Apeldoorn to place the fountain. With the slogan 'A quarter does not make you poorer, a fountain does make Apeldoorn richer', people were called upon to donate money for a fountain. On 31 August 1932 (Queen's Day), the Kwartjesfontein, placed in the pond of the Oranjepark, was unveiled by Princess Juliana.

On August 31, 1932 (Queen's Day), the Kwartjesfontein, placed in the pond of the Oranjepark, was unveiled by Princess Juliana. The fountain was financed by contributions from the Apeldoorn community, but the driving force was Jo Wegener, publisher of the Nieuwe Apeldoornsche Courant, who called on his readers for a modest contribution in the form of a quarter guilder, under the motto "A quarter guilder will not make you poorer. A fountain will make Apeldoorn richer".
