There were many water mills on the stream, some of which have been preserved. The Nonnemolen (Leupegem), the Kasteelmolen in Schorisse (milling), the Ladeuzemolen in Etikhove, the Romansmolen, Ter Borgtmolen (milling) and Het Schampkot (only ruins) in Maarke-Kerkem.

In the past, there were frequent flooding problems in the Maarkebeek catchment area.[1] That is why four flood areas were created in Maarkedal, at the Kasteelmolen, Romansmolen, Borgtmolen and at the height of the Pauwelsbeek.[2] A policy will also be drawn up by the end of 2015 to promote fish migration by means of fish ladders near these watermills.

Sandwiched between a babbling watercourse and a stately row of towering poplars, this slow path offers a wonderfully sheltered and natural walking experience. The narrow sandy path winds through the green grass and brings you very close to the local waterfowl and bank vegetation. An absolute recommendation for those who want to trade the hills for a relaxing, flatter piece of nature along the water.
