Best Hikes to Roman Villa of Blankenheim

Tips

  • In Blankenheim you will find the remains of a Roman estate, one of the largest of its kind in the Rhineland. By means of modern architecture, the portico, the Porticus, which today, with just under 60 meters, gives an idea of the huge extent of the former villa, was reconstructed.

  • In 1997, Villa Rustika was included in the list of permanent archaeological monuments. Between 2005 and 2007, as well as 2011, renewed excavation work was carried out by the LVR Office for Archaeological Preservation in the Rhineland as part of the Roman Road experience area of the Regionale 2010, which was intended to check the condition of the building remains that had already been examined in the 19th century to develop a concept for the public presentation of this important archaeological monument. The results of the investigation were included in an architectural competition. According to the winning design by the architects schneider + schumacher (Frankfurt a.M.) and the landscape architect Michael Triebswetter (GTL, Kassel), the original substance of the building was covered with soil for protection. By superelevation, they are visible again in the terrain. The ancient walls have been traced with steel bands. The core of the complex is formed by a “transparent” framework made of CorTen steel slats that can be seen from afar, which is based on the porticus of the younger main building and is accessible. Behind it, the visitor can look at the original wall substance through two "archaeological windows" under glass plates. Source: kuladig.de/Object-View/O-UM-20130327-0023

  • The Roman villa is largely represented only by floor plans in the annex. It takes some imagination to imagine the complex.
