Today's rococo chapel stands on the site of an older chapel that was mentioned as early as 1671. Count Josef Franz Georg Ludwig von Manderscheid-Blankenheim had it built between 1773 and 1780 on the occasion of the death of his third wife. In 1781 the chapel was consecrated. The chapel has the ground plan of a cross, with the round apse (= altar niche in the choir) facing west. Seven “foot falls” lead from the village to the chapel. They show scenes from the Passion of Jesus. It used to be customary to pray at the footfalls in the case of death or serious illness.
The windows and the wall niche above the portal, decorated with a cross, are in rich but simple rococo forms. In the open gable there is a cast-iron coat of arms plate with the coat of arms of the builder. A wrought-iron bell frame adorns the façade. The three wooden altars from the 18th century, dedicated to the patron saints of Blankenheim, Maria, Georg and Margarete, stood in the parish church until 1871. Above the main altar you can see the coat of arms of Count Johann Wilhelm and his wife Ludovika Franziska (+1764). The gallery shows a curved parapet and stucco on the underside.
The field name "Hülchrath" probably refers to a settlement from the Rodezeit (9th-11th century) and means "clearing of the Huldiko".

The cross chapel was built between 1773 and 1780 on behalf of Josef Franz Georg Ludwig, Count of Manderscheid-Blankenheim-Gerolstein, on the occasion of the death of his third wife. The chapel, built of plastered quarry stone, was consecrated to the Holy Cross in 1781 and thus received the name Kreuzkapelle.
The Kreuzkapelle and the associated Stations of the Cross have been listed as historical monuments since July 1988. Source: baukunst-nrw.de/objekte/Kreuzkapelle-Blankenheim--3132.htm
We would have liked to have seen the inside of the chapel during our visit today. Unfortunately the door was locked.
