The town hall is a Renaissance building, designed by the architect Cornelis Floris De Vriendt. It was built between 1561 and 1564. The town hall is largely built in the Renaissance style, although the middle part is already reminiscent of the Baroque style. The town hall has undergone a thorough restoration in 2018-2022 and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A beautiful piece of ironwork from 1490 was made out of love for a painter's daughter. The father (painter) of Catherina Heyns despised Quinten. By making this showpiece he made an impression and he was allowed to marry his daughter. In the ironwork you can recognize images of Brabo and Antigoon. From the blacksmith, Quinten was taken into the world of painting.

Antwerp is turning its town hall into a contemporary 'House of the City' where the administration and residents will feel completely at home. Until then, you'll bump into a construction site here. But not just any yard.

Take a walk around the packed 'House' and see the beautiful illustrations by artist Fatinha Ramos. In each drawing you discover a special part of Antwerp, together with Portico, the main character from the Antwerp legend.

According to legend, Portico, a water creature from the Scheldt, falls in love with an Antwerp human woman, Bijou. Only when he gets her to marry him can he turn into a human being and spend the rest of his life with her.
