The Brabo Fountain is a fountain on the Grote Markt in the Belgian city of Antwerp. It was created in 1887 by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux (1852-1908). The bronze sculpture clearly takes up stylistic features of Italian Mannerism.

In the middle of Antwerp's Grote Markt is the Brabo fountain by sculptor Jef Lambeaux from 1887. It depicts the legend of Brabo and Antigoon – precisely at the moment when Brabo wants to throw the giant's severed hand into the Scheldt.

In 1887, the Brabo Fountain by Jef Lambeaux was placed exactly where the trees of liberty had stood. Incidentally, this sculptor himself was born on the Grote Markt, in the building with number 44. The fountain has a typical 19th-century pièce montée shape, reminiscent of a tiered wedding cake.

The Roman hero Brabo stands high above a few yearning mermaids and the corpse of the toll-bearing giant Antigoon, who had been beheaded by him. Brabo throws the hand of the dead giant into the Scheldt. According to legend, this is where the name of the city originated: ‘handwerpen’ (hand throwing). According to others, the name Brabo lives on in Brabant, the area that the hero is said to have received as a reward for his deed. What certainly played a major role in the origin of the legend is the long-standing importance that Antwerp attaches to the Scheldt as a source of prosperity and trade.
