The slender tower of the Protestant Church marks the center of Barkhausen an der Porta, visible from afar. The representative brick building in the neo-Gothic style was built in 1899, shortly after the founding of the independent parish of Barkhausen (1895), which had previously belonged to St. Martini in Minden for centuries. The architect was the master church builder Heinrich Hutze (1853-1913) from Barkhausen/Porta. He had previously built the neo-Gothic churches in neighboring Lerbeck (1892) and Kleinenbremen (1883-96), as well as the former Bismarck column (1902) on the Jakobsberg.
