Worth seeing, the large new building next to the old lock

The Schachtschleuse overcomes the height difference of about 13 m between the Mittellandkanal and the Weser. It was built in the years 1911-1914 with a usable chamber length of 82 m and a width of 10 m as a massive structure.

In order to keep water consumption as low as possible, 16 closed saving basins were arranged on both sides of the lock chamber in four levels one above the other. These sinks can hold 7,300 m³ of water from the lock chamber. In the case of downward slipping, 4,000 m³ are discharged to the Weser; when moving upwards, these 4,000 m³ must be taken from the canal. With the changing water levels of the Weser, the drop height of the lock is a maximum of 13.20 m. The filling or emptying of the chamber takes on average seven minutes. The lower gate of the lock is a lifting gate. It has a weight of 63 t and is designed as a welded steel construction. The counterweights of the gate are located in the characteristic lifting towers at the bottom of the lock. The upper gate is a folding gate and designed as a riveted steel construction.

In 1988/89, after a period of operation of more than 70 years, a basic repair of the shaft lock took place. Here, among other things, the redesign of Oberhauptdrempels, whereby the useful length of the lock chamber was increased to 85 m. This allows European vessels to use the lock. The construction expenditure for the basic repair amounted to 10.4 million DM.
