A long time ago there was a terrible plague of rats in the city of Hameln.
The rats were everywhere. In the houses and cellars, in pantries,
Barrels and boxes. They ate everything up. Everyone was desperate because it was almost
there was nothing left to eat. One day a young lad came into it
City. He was dressed in very bright colors. He went to the mayor and said:
"I can free you from the rats if you give me 300 guilders."

have disappeared. ”So the Pied Piper went to the market place and took
his little silver whistle and blew on it. It didn't take long and
the rats came running from all sides. They came out of the houses and
from the roofs. The whole crowd of rats gathered around the
Rat catcher. He walked slowly down the street to the river. All rats
followed him. The fellow went up to his knees in the river, the rats
followed him and all drowned. The citizens hardly believed what they saw
had. All the rats were gone. The mayor and the
City councilors were very happy. But they also thought of all the money they had
promised the Pied Piper. They didn't want to give it to him. "Who
knows if the rats won't come back, ”said the treasurer. "We
will only give him half the wages. ”said the mayor. In order to
all agreed. When the Pied Piper came for his wages
the mayor gave him only 150 guilders. Then the
Pied Piper angry. The pied piper came back a few weeks later.
Again he stood in the market place and blew. But this time came
no rats. The children heard the piper and came out of the houses and
gathered around the Pied Piper. Soon they began to sing and to
dance and followed the pied piper on a long train out of town. Of
the children have never been heard from again.

The city of Hameln suffered from rats and mice: these animals ate up people's food. Then a pied piper came to Hameln. The mayor of Hameln was happy and promised him money as a reward if he could rid the city of rats and mice.The pied piper roamed the streets, playing his flute. Lured by the music, the rats and mice came and followed him. He led the animals out of the city. But when the pied piper asked for his reward, he got nothing.A few weeks later, the pied piper came back to Hamelin to seek revenge. He played his flute again, but this time girls and boys came and ran after him. According to legend, it was all of Hamelin's children who were older than four years. He disappeared with the children, who were never seen again.
