Fort WilliamThe fortifications on the Klüt, also known as Fort George or Klüt fortress, were located on the Klüt elevation to the west of Hamelin. The complex, built at the end of the 18th century, consisted of four forts. They served to provide military protection for Hamelin Fortress on the opposite bank of the Weser. Hamelin thus became the strongest fortress of the Electorate of Hanover and was considered the "Gibraltar of the North" at the end of the 18th century. Following a decree by Napoleon, the fortifications on the Klüt and in the city of Hamelin were razed in 1808. Source: Wikipedia
