The Schaagbachtal, located in the natural area of Schwalm-Nette-Platte, is of national importance due to a diversely structured biotope complex with occurrences of the priority habitats alder and ash floodplain forest and birch bog forest. The area is characterized by a large variety of species and a complete inventory of habitats typical of the natural area and is therefore of outstanding importance as a refuge in the natural area. The Schaagbachtal is among other things breeding area for black woodpecker and kingfisher. It is home to large, species-rich, brook-influenced alder and alluvial forests in an exemplary formation that is representative of the natural environment. In addition, wet grassland and spring areas can be found in the area, but also small areas of moors and wet heaths. It is the habitat of the common wedge damsel, a species of dragonfly that is threatened with extinction in North Rhine-Westphalia, the natterjack toad, the meadow pipit and the king fern. It is characteristic of the area that the sources of five brooks lie here, which have allowed the Schaagbach Valley to develop into a species-rich wetland. The stream meanders through damp valleys whose edges can rise up to 20 m high. One of the springs is located near Haus Wildenrath south of Wildenrath.

"... The Rumpenbach and Schaagbach have their source areas near the Haus Wildenrath educational park. The Rumpenbach feeds and flows through the pond of Haus Wildenrath and flows into the Schaagbach after about 1 km.
The Schaagbach flows west past Haus Wildenrath and finally takes on the Rumpenbach. The stream then meanders strongly through the Birgeler Wald nature reserve. Before the Schaagbach passes Schaufenberg and Rosenthal, it flows past a listed moth and ditch complex. ... "

A beautiful swamp landscape in the forest, which is usually easy to hike. Today it was very muddy. Solid shoes are essential.
