The small reindeer group here in the zoo consists of the bull “Loki” as well as the cows “Sölvie”, “Finnja” and the calf “Lale”, born in 2022.
Reindeer were also kept in the zoo by Landgrave Wilhelm IV over 400 years ago. In 1580, Duke Charles of Sweden gave the landgrave twelve reindeer and a young Sami woman who accompanied the animals on their long journey and was supposed to look after them in the future even when they were away from home. This “wild Lapp woman” knew a lot about reindeer, she even slept with them in the stable. But the reindeer were weakened by the long journey on ships and horse-drawn carts and were missing their usual food in the unfamiliar environment. Soon they became ill and gradually died. The Sami woman also disappeared with them. Today there is a monument on the roundabout commemorating this “wild Lapp woman”.

The animals also run through the zoo with the keepers and you can see them up close. Really very beautiful and interesting animals.
