The sight of the now idyllic Hexenhäusle, the small half-timbered building of the gatekeeper house at the Vestnertor dating from the 16th / 17th century, almost makes the viewer forget the enormous efforts that were required in the 16th century to get around on the north and west sides to strengthen the castle fortifications.
Under the direction of the Maltese fortress builder Antoni Fazuni, three huge, pentagonal bastions were built between 1538 and 1545.
