The water tower was formerly part of Nuremberg's city fortifications. It was built as a city wall tower between 1320 and 1325, as part of the bridge over the Pegnitz at the Henkersteg. With the expansion of the city fortifications, this tower, like the Henkerturm, lost its original function and was used as a prison until the end of the imperial city period.
