The church was rebuilt after the first town fire in 1563-1565 using demolition material from the Altzella monastery. The early Gothic portal of the chapter hall (built around 1210-1220) was used as the main entrance to the church building. The late Romanesque south portal of the church comes from the refectory (built around 1170-1230); the sperm whale rib in this portal can be traced back to a gift from the Electress Anna. The relief above the portal also dates from this period.
