The Gevangenpoort in the fortified town of Woudrichem is the only remaining water gate as part of the fortifications. The gate dates from after 1573, the year in which the city burned. It belongs to the ramparts built in 1580. In the Middle Ages Woudrichem had a wall, in which there were 5 city gates. There is a cantilevered bay tower on the northeast corner.
The building is now used as a restaurant. In the 19th century, however, the chambers in the gate served as a prison.

Water or Prison Gate. Rectangular brick building, which, according to the internal roof and beam construction, was built after 1573 (destruction of the city). On the northeast corner a polygonal cantilever resting on arch friezes (a match has disappeared on the northwest corner). Pointed arched passages with arched niches above. Internally a stone stairway with trough vault.
