And so Loevestein Castle is located in the middle of this nature reserve. A true castle in the middle of nature with the Maas and the Waal 'on the doorstep'. The castle has been around for about 650 years. In 1361, knight Dirc Loef van Horne started building the castle. In the years to come, the castle has had many destinations. For example, it was once the place where knights lived, it was a defensive place to protect the Dutch, but it has also been used as a state prison for Hugo de Groot, among others. The castle can currently be visited as a museum.
