History of the hospital:
The Alijn family founded the house of God in 1363 as a peace offering after a fatal dispute between the Alijn and Rijms families. Count Lodewijk van Male decided that the Rijms family had to pay a sum of 200 pounds parisi to the Alijn family. He became a co-initiator and patron of the hospital.
When admitted to the hospital, the patient had to give up his immovable property, he was allowed to keep his movable property.
During the 16th century, the house took on its present form: an entrance gate and eight houses on the street side and sixteen three-room houses around the courtyard. The late Gothic Saint Catherine's Chapel was built between 1543 and 1546.

From October to May, the puppet theater with Pierke van Alijn provides weekly adventures on Saturdays in the museum attic. During a performance (about 1.5 hours), Pierke and his friends experience exciting adventures. The puppet theater is suitable for children from the age of three. During the autumn, Christmas, spring break and Easter holidays, Pierke will also be present on Wednesdays. During the Ghent Festivities, there is a performance in the courtyard garden for 9 days.
