The hospital itself had to make way for the covered Vismarkt in 1872, but the entrance and part of the (16th- and 17th-century) facade on Veerleplein were preserved.
The "Wenemaershospitaal" was founded in 1323 by Willem Wenemaer and his wife Margaretha Sbrunen.
