A narrow passageway with a statue of Saint Lawrence above a round arch is often used by tourists because it leads to public restrooms... but perhaps few realize they're walking through the entrance to a former hospital with a history dating back to the 14th century.
The hospital itself had to make way for the covered Vismarkt in 1872, but the entrance and part of the (16th- and 17th-century) facade on Veerleplein were preserved. The "Wenemaershospitaal" was founded in 1323 by Willem Wenemaer and his wife Margaretha Sbrunen.Source: inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/erfgoedobjecten/25888
