THE GATE BUILDING OF THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
Long before the name Herberg Macharius was created, the iconic white gatehouse was part of the slaughterhouse that stood between 1857 and the early 1990s on the site of today's Coyendanspark and Sint-Baafsdorp.

In the later years of the slaughterhouse, the building would have served as a so-called 'vellenkot'. Here the skins of the slaughtered animals were hung to 'drip out'. At that time, the offal was transported to the Scheldt via collection pits in the floor of the current Herberg. The story goes that the water looked reddish brown from the offal… Then the gatehouse is used in a finer way these days.
