Major restoration works have been going on since 2006: stabilization of the Gothic choir, replacement of the roof, cleaning of the stone walls, restoration of the stained glass windows... The work is always changing and every day visitors can visit the recently discover renovated parts.

The Tournai Cathedral, or Cathedral of Our Lady (French: Notre-Dame de Tournai, Dutch: Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Doornik), is a Roman Catholic church of the Diocese of Tournai in Tournai, Belgium. It has been classified both as a Wallonia's major heritage since 1936 and as a World Heritage Site since 2000. The Cathedral and Tournai is a beautiful location.

Built in the first half of the 12th century, Tournai Cathedral is distinguished by a Romanesque nave of exceptional size, by the great sculptural richness of its capitals, by a transept loaded with five towers and by its frame, one of the oldest in Europe. Above all, the cathedral bears witness to a considerable exchange of influences between the architecture of the Île de France, the Rhineland and Norman during the short period preceding the emergence of Gothic architecture. The dimensions

of the Notre-Dame de Tournai cathedral, unpublished for the time, make it an eminent example of these large school buildings north of the Seine which foreshadow the gigantic volumes of Gothic cathedrals.

Although the building remains partly accessible to the public, the cathedral has benefited in recent years from a major campaign of restoration, conservation and enhancement. After having concentrated in the Romanesque nave, work is now focused on the transept using processes

techniques never before tested in restoration sites. Important archaeological excavations were also carried out by Professor Raymond Brulet (UCL) in the very heart of the cathedral; an enhancement will soon reveal all its secrets.
