The origin of this bridge dates back to the time of Louis XIV and takes its name from the remarkable wrought iron balustrade. The Castle Bridge (that's how it was called) is renamed the Iron Bridge
It temporarily took the name Marie-Louise Bridge, under the Empire, but resumed its original name in 1815.
In 1841 it was completely rebuilt, but the construction method was hardly convincing.
It was decided to demolish it again and rebuild it in 1863. It should be noted that at the time it gave direct access to the Tournai station which was then located on the quay at the level of the current Sakharov quay.
