You never know what something is good for and what it would look like if the "award" had been made at the time.

Nixenkai was intended to serve as a market and community forum, but the shops were not as popular with residents as desired. A neighborhood center called "Am Nixenkai," founded in 1999 and originally located at Am Speicher 8, had to close after a few years due to a lack of funding. The mermaid in the circle is the landmark of the surrounding residential park. This 1997 sculpture, "Nixenspiel," was designed by Christine Gersch.

The “Nixenspiel” (mermaid game), created in 1997 by the artist Christine Gersch in Stralau Bay on the “Nixenkai” (mermaid plateau), was created as part of the artistic conception of modern use and is reminiscent of the long fishing tradition of the place.
On a paved and partially green square stands the clearly larger-than-life sculpture of a reclining mermaid. The hybrid creature with a female upper body and fish body has supported itself on its right arm and laid its head back in such a way that its mighty head of hair falls down picturesquely. With its left hand, the mermaid grasps a tall, slender steel mast, which is assembled from various steel elements (presumably intended to be movable). Its crowning glory is a ship. Two smaller mermaids are attached to the pole mast with brackets, which appear to be swimming playfully in the water. The figures are made of concrete and brightly painted. The large mermaid is elaborately decorated with mosaic ceramics.
