The Borreberg is a hill located southeast of Bilzen, on the eastern bank of Demer, near the center of Bilzen.
According to some, there would have been a castle on top of the Borreberg in the Middle Ages, from which the city was defended. The castle is said to have been destroyed in 1483 and never rebuilt. Little is known about this castle and no archaeological traces have been found to prove its existence.
Later a chapel was built, dedicated to the Holy Cross, which could be reached from the beguinage via a footpath. This chapel was demolished around 1800.
Nowadays one can climb the hill via steps from the Begijnhofstraat and the Brugstraat. A viewing tower was built on the flat top, from where one has a view of Vochtig-Haspengouw and the Demer valley, and to the north the Kempens Plateau with the slag heaps and the industrial area of Genk.

You can climb the hill via steps from the Begijnhofstraat and the Brugstraat. A viewing tower was built on the flat top, from where you have a view of Vochtig-Haspengouw and the Demervallei, and in the north the Kempens Plateau with the slag heaps and the industrial area of Genk. Feel free to rest from the climb on the bench near the cross with a view of the climbing tower

There was probably a castle here that belonged to the counts of Loon. Maybe with a lookout tower. Little is known about the appearance of the Borreberg castle, destroyed in 1483 and not rebuilt afterwards. You can climb the site via steps, both from Begijnhofstraat and from Brugstraat. On the platform where the castle once stood, there is now a tourist lookout tower that offers you a panoramic view of our Demer town and the surrounding area.
