This tunnel runs under the old abandoned railway line from Hasselt-Maastricht. Railway line 20 was a railway line that ran from the Y Beverst junction on railway line 34 from Hasselt to Maastricht. The line is 17.2 km long. The line was reopened in 2009 after much lobbying and a major investment, but was permanently canceled in 2020. The section between Beverst and Maastricht was closed to passenger transport on April 4, 1954 and finally to freight transport on November 24, 1992. Between Beverst and Munsterbilzen, the tracks have been broken up except for a few remains. The tracks are still present between Munsterbilzen and the bridge over the Albert Canal near Gellik. A rail bike is operated on this section between Munsterbilzen and Eigenbilzen. The tracks have been broken up again between the bridge over the Albert Canal at Gellik and Lanaken.
