Hiking Highlight
The Nederhemert Castle, hidden in the forest, was first mentioned around 1300 and was probably built around this time, surrounded by a moat.
Unfortunately, it was closed to visitors during my hike on Sunday, July 9th, 2017.
What a shame!!!!
I would have loved to admire the garden or park.

The island of Nederhemert-zuid is a gem and out of season you can enjoy the tranquility, the restored Nederhemert castle, the Eilandkerk and the Hamaritha clog path that runs through it. In the summer it is busier because the playground is open then. If you walk past the castle from the playground, you will end up at the ferry that takes you to Nederhemert-Noord.

Nederhemert Castle has a building history of seven hundred years. The oldest parts date from the early 14th century. The castle has undergone many changes over the centuries. It developed from a defensible residential tower into a polygonal complex. All this time it was also inhabited.
At the end of the Second World War it was badly damaged by fire. Nederhemert was restored between 2001 and 2005. An office is now located in the castle. It is only open to the public during Heritage Days. That is the second weekend in September. (More info: glk.nl)
