How did the Sterrenbos come about?

Once in the 17th century, around 1670, there was a dike breach, which deposited an enormous layer of sand over the inner dike area. The Lord van Hemert who lived at the castle then got hold of the area to repair the dyke. He tried to lease the land, but because there was little to grow it yielded little. In the 18th century he had a Sterrebos constructed there. Most Sterrebossen were part of a formal garden layout around a castle with symmetrical, uncluttered flower beds and avenues. The star-shaped avenues not only gave beautiful vistas, but also served for hunting, to hunt game so that the gentlemen sitting comfortably on the points of the star could easily get the game in front of their sights.
