Living in Altena, Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands. Working on regaining sufficient physical fitness towards longer nature hikes on various continents. Next goal for now: being able to walk 15 kilometres a day. Still a long way to go, but getting closer step by step while enjoying the journey to get there :-)

Walk on both sides of the Drainage Canal 's-Hertogenbosch - Drongelen.
There is space to park along the Nieuwkuijkseweg between Vlijmen and Cromvoirt, directly at the bridge over the canal.
Follow the forest path on the Cromvoirt side of the canal, with the watercourse on your left and the golf course on your right. After about 2.25 km you can cross the Afwateringskanaal via a bridge and walk back on the cycle path on the other side of the canal, Vlijmen. That path takes you over the lock.

Natuurmonumenten: Back in time, to the Second World War. Walk along five objects that recall the explosive past of the woodland area of the M.A.St. This former Munitions Ausgabe Stelle of the Germans was several football fields large and was blown up in 1944.
This route is an initiative of the local local history circle De Ketsheuvel, in which Natuurmonumenten has gladly participated. See their website deketsheuvel.nl for more historical information about the area.

The Nieuwkuijkse Wiel and the Nieuwkuijkse Bosje are close to each other, on both sides of the Heidijk. The Heidijk runs south of Vlijmen and Nieuwkuijk. Most of this ring dike is more than 700 years old.
In the night of 29 to 30 December 1880, a heavy southeast storm created an almost 150 meters long hole in the dike. The Nieuwkuijkse Wiel, a chamber, originated at the site of the dike breach.
The Nieuwkuijkse Bosje is a former coppice grove on the border between nutrient-rich river plain and nutrient-poor sandy soil. The grove is eight hectares and is managed by the Forestry Commission.
