To commemorate the Cretan liberation struggle against the Turkish rule, in particular the battle in Arkadi, several monuments of the Cretan heroes are erected here.
October 18, 2020
The 1866 square was named in honor of the Cretans' great revolution (1866 to 1869) against the Turks, which culminated in the Arkadi Holocaust.
The square's informal name from 1866 is "New Shops", denoting the location and development of the surrounding area in recent years as the city expanded outside the walls. The area used to be part of the Ottoman cemetery ("mezarlikia"), which stretches far to the west.
The square from 1866 is one of the city's "green lungs". Busts of some of the most prominent heroes of the Cretan revolutions dominate the square, while in the center of the 1866 square is an elegant Arabic fountain.
