In the wake of the Napoleonic wars of liberation, the Battle of Hagelberg took place on 27.08.1813 between a French army and Saxon units on the one hand, and Prussian troops and Russian Cossacks on the other. On the Prussian side both regular soldiers and the newly formed Landwehr fought. Because of the heavy rains, rifles and powder had become unusable and the soldiers fought with bayonets and rifle butts. Therefore, the battle was also called the Piston Battle.Because Russian soldiers fought on the Prussian side, the GDR government took this as an opportunity in addition to the old monument to build a new, on which the German-Russian arms brotherhood was emphasized.
