During the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation, the Battle of Hagelberg took place on August 27, 1813, between a French army and Saxon units on the one hand, and Prussian troops and Russian Cossacks on the other. Both regular soldiers and the newly formed Landwehr fought on the Prussian side. Due to the heavy rain, rifles and gunpowder had become unusable, and the soldiers fought with bayonets and rifle butts. Hence, the battle was also called the "Beat of the Butts."

Because Russian soldiers were fighting on the Prussian side, the GDR government took this opportunity to erect a new monument in addition to the old one, emphasizing the German-Russian brotherhood in arms.
