The Polleur Venn is a fen landscape created by human hands over centuries and cannot be compared with the vastness of the Walloon Fens. Originally about 90% was forested. Around 1900 the deforestation of the beech, oak and birch forests began. Peat extraction flourished.
Massive afforestation with spruce trees continued until 1970.
