The Hohe Venn is considered to be the largest high moor in Europe.

The landscape of the High Fens inspires again and again. "Wild nature" pure, lonely nature trails, sometimes muddy, forest trails that lead through spruce and deciduous forests. In the area of the open fen landscape, we still find wild and unspoilt areas.

The raised bogs are still real, natural landscapes that have formed themselves over centuries and have experienced little or no human influence. For most people, the name "Hohes Fagnes" is associated with a swamp and moor landscape, where the eye sees nothing but heath and moor far and wide, where cloudy fog usually covers the land, cold and damp cover its heights.

Large areas are formed as high moors, from which the name is derived: Venn, Fenn (Dutch Veen) for moor. With 694 m O.P. the Botrange is both the highest peak in the Hautes Fagnes and the highest mountain in Belgium.

From a purely geological point of view, the High Fens is neither part of the North Eifel nor the Ardennes, even if both are said to be so over and over again. It forms the core of a large, vault-like upturn with the oldest strata. The geologists have coined the term "Massif of Stavelot" for the area and regard this massif as something completely independent in terms of its geological formation. It is a very old massif belonging to the so-called Cambrian period (570-500 million years ago).
