Purely geologically, the High Fens are neither part of the North Eifel nor the Ardennes, even though both are often said. It forms the core of a large, vault-like uplift with the oldest layers. Geologists have coined the term "Massif of Stavelot" for the area and consider this massif to be something quite independent from the perspective of its geological origin. It is a very old mountain range, which belongs to the so-called Cambrian period (570 – 500 million years ago).
