Large areas are formed as raised bogs, from which the name is derived: Venn, Fenn (Dutch Veen) for bog. At 694 m above sea level, the nearby Botrange is both the highest elevation in the High Fens and the highest mountain in Belgium.

Hiking

From a purely geological point of view, the High Fens is neither part of the North Eifel nor the Ardennes, even if both are said to be so over and over again. It forms the core of a large, vault-like upturn with the oldest strata. The geologists have coined the term "Massif of Stavelot" for the area and regard this massif as something completely independent in terms of its geological formation. It is a very old massif belonging to the so-called Cambrian period (570-500 million years ago).
