Caution ⚠️Kermeter-Hochstraße in the Eifel National Park
blocked due to snow breakGuests should avoid national park forests and visitor focal pointsGemünd / Heimbach. Trees that have fallen due to snow load block the passage on the Kermeter high road L15 in the Eifel National Park. The Landesbetrieb Straßen NRW has therefore closed the Höhenstraße between Heimbach-Schwammenauel and the Lohrbachsgarten car park, at the junction of Landesstraße 249 between Schleiden / Wolfgarten and Mariawald Monastery. The road closure will last at least over the weekend. The Schleiden road maintenance depot does not rule out the closure of other roads.
Due to the enormous amounts of snow on the trees, there is an acute risk of snow breakage in the forests of the Eifel National Park. In the event of a snow break, large branches can fall and entire trees collapse directly under the snow load and, as happens in the Kermeter, fall onto the street or onto hiking trails. Both conifers and deciduous trees are affected by snow breakage. The Eifel National Park Administration therefore appeals to its guests: "Please avoid the forest areas and also the main visitor spots". Because the currently required minimum distance to other visitors can no longer be maintained on overcrowded parking lots and hiking trails.
In addition, cross-country skiing is not possible because of the risk of snow breakages, but also to protect against corona infections. There are no groomed trails in the national park and its surroundings.Photo / Text: Eifel National Park / N. Kolster
