The Gambswoog used to be a reservoir with a hermitage for timber rafting. The Ritterstein is named after the Gambs District Forestry Council, who in 1828 was responsible for the forestation of the Elmstein Forest. The knight's stone is maintained by the Palatinate Forest Association PWV.

Here is one of the Palatinate Forest Association's over 300 knight's stones - in the form of the beautiful inscription on the end stone of the Trift weir. The "PWV" abbreviation (typical for knight's stones) is located above this inscription.

"The Gambswoog was once part of the Holztrift on Wartenbach. The approximately seven kilometer long Wartenbach is part of the catchment area of the Wieslauter, which drains towards the Rhine plain. The Woog was built in 1841. The Holztrift in the Palatinate Forest was operated on a large scale until the late 19th century . The Holztrift on Wartenbach was discontinued in 1906 at the latest."
